21 Aug 2010:
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari`s personal physician, Dr Asim Hussain, who also heads the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC), says Pakistani medical graduates from China would have to pass the National Equivalence Board (NEB) examination to get permission for practice in Pakistan.

"I am very clear that no Pakistani medical graduate, who had studied in a non-English speaking country, should be permitted to practice unless he or she clears the NEB, conducted by the University of Health Services UHS," Dr Asim, Vice President of the PMDC, who is accompanying the president in his foreign tour, told The News.

He said that the PMDC had now outsourced the NEB test. When previously the PMDC used to conduct this examination, all those who appeared in it were declared successful, he said. But when the UHS had been assigned this job by the PMDC, only 10 percent candidates could pass the test, he said.” I want to see where we are wrong because the difference between the results of the PMDC and UHS is too wide," Dr Asim said and added that there was a proposal that the conduct of the NEB examination should be rotated among different public universities of Pakistan every year.

To a question, he said that the Federal Health Ministry had recommended to the PMDC to recognize the degrees of the two Chinese medical universities. "The proposal is under consideration," he said.
China`s Dalian Medical University and Zheng Zhou Medical University have requested recognition of their degrees.
Dalian University ranks first among 30 such institutions, which are authorized to enroll foreign students for MBBS course in English by the Chinese Education Ministry. Currently, nearly 500 Pakistani students are doing MBBS in this university.

Zheng Zhou University houses more than 100 Pakistani students with some 400 students already graduated. Pakistan`s Health Ministry and PMDC recognized the degrees of seven Chinese medical universities last year. They included Peking Union Medical College, Beijing Medical University, Shanghai Medical University, Shanghai Second Medical University, School of Stomatology in Shanghai Second Medical University, School of Medicine in Xian Jiatong University and Xinjiang Medical University.

An increasing number of Pakistani students are getting enlisted in the Chinese universities. Currently, there are more than 5,000 Pakistani students in various Chinese universities. President Asif Ali Zardari wants this number to cross 10,000. The Pakistan Embassy in China is pushing for the recognition of the degrees of China`s Dalian Medical University and Zheng Zhou Medical University at an early date, says an official.

The main root of the current Zhejiang University, Qiushi Academy, was founded in 1897 and was one of the earliest modern academies of higher education in China. Since 1901 Qiushi Academy had its name changed several times, and even was once suspended. In 1927, on the historic site of the academy, the Third Natinal Sun Yat-sen University was established. On April 1, 1928, it was renamed Zhejiang University. Since July 1, 1928, it had been known as National Zhejiang University with three schools, namely School of Engineering, School of Agriculture and School of Liberal Arts and Science.

Since the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Zhejiang University was forced to move to Guizhou. Under the guidance of President Chu Kochen, the famous meteorologist,  geologist and educator, Zhejiang University went all the way through difficulties and adversities to establish itself as one of the leading universities in China. It was even honored as “Oriental Cambridge” by famous British scholar Joseph Needham. In 1946 Zhejiang University moved back to Hangzhou. In two years’ time, it has become a comprehensive university with 7 schools, 25 departments, 9 research institutes and 1 research center covering Liberal Arts, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Normal Education, Law, Medicine and so on.

In 1952, universities in China underwent a nationwide reshuffling due to which the disciplines and institutes of Zhejiang University were restructured and dissociated. Some institutes were upgraded to become colleges or universities and some merged with other universities such as Hangchow University and Zhejiang Provincial College of Medicine. Part of the School of Liberal Arts and School of Science merged with School of Liberal Arts and Science of Hangchow University and Zhejiang Education College to form Zhejiang Teacher’s College. In 1958 it was merged to the newly founded Hangzhou Unversity. The School of Agriculture was separated to form Zhejiang College of Agriculture, renamed as Zhejiang Agricultural University in 1960. The School of Medicine was merged to Zhejiang Provincial College of Medicine to form Zhejiang Medical College which was later renamed Zhejiang Medical University.
